James McMullan Biography

James McMullan was born in Tsingtao, China in 1934 and spent his childhood moving between North America and Asia. He left China in 1941 moved to Canada with his mother while his father joined the British Army. He enrolled in boarding school in India in 1944 and later moved to Shanghai following his father’s death in a plane crash. He returned to Canada with his mother and finally emigrated to the United States at age seventeen. He spent one year at the Cornish School of Allied Arts in Seattle and then volunteered for the U.S. Army draft. McMullan was placed at the Psychological Warfare Center at Fort Bragg, North Carolina where he illustrated diagrams of where to place propaganda loudspeakers on Sherman tanks.
