Cornelius Cogswell Sampson Biography
Born in Billings, MT on July 21, 1907, Cornelius Sampson grew up on a ranch near the Crow reservation and taught himself to paint. From 1929-34 he attended the Art Institute of Chicago, and earned his tuition as a caricaturist on the excursion boats on Lake Michigan and by driving cattle from Montana to Chicago.

After his art training, he moved to California and worked in Yosemite on art projects for the WPA (Works Projects Association). In 1939 he established a studio in San Francisco and during the final year of the Golden Gate International Exposition, acted as art director.

When not working as an industrial designer, he painted watercolors and etched in his leisure.
