Original Crayon Lithograph
In order to illustrate the song, ‘Eros Vanquished’ by Maurice Donnay and popularized by Yvette Guilbert, this work depicts two women at a bar with Cupid, disgruntled and forlorn supported by a crutch with a broken leg. His head is wrapped, covering most of his eyes but still allowing the viewer to distinguish the frustrated expression on his face. In the background we see the lavishly dressed women, presumably taking part in the bohemian theatre culture throughout Paris during the late 19th century. The playful quality of this work illustrates Lautrec’s use of graphic art as a means for depicting the humor and whimsy in daily life.
