Original 1909 Men Wanted for the Army, pre-World War I vintage recruitment poster. Artist: Michael P. Whelan. Size: 40” x 30”. Linen-backed in Grade A- condition. Excellent colors, no fading. A superb and highly collectible example of American military propaganda, this 1909 recruiting poster by Michael P. Whelan predates the United States' entry into World War I. Unlike the more common "Uncle Sam" posters of the later 1910s, it focuses on the Army's technical modernization, showcasing a coastal artillery battery in action. 1
The composition features a commanding officer in a dress uniform standing in the foreground, framing a high-stakes coastal defense scene. In the midground, a crew mans a "Disappearing Carriage" Great Gun, while observers on the fort's heights use binoculars to scan the horizon for naval threats. The lower margin includes the original blank cartouche intended for the recruiting station's address.
Although the poster is an artistic composite representing the U.S. Army Coastal Artillery Corps, the specific visual cues suggest a location within the Endicott Period coastal defenses, most likely overlooking New York Harbor or the Chesapeake Bay.
