This striking 1934 lithograph by Leonetto Cappiello, the "Father of Modern Advertising," is a powerful example of political graphic art from the interwar period. Created for the UNC (Union Nationale des Combattants), the poster served as a call to action for French veterans to join the "Action Combattante" movement.
Recruitment of members for the Combatant Action of the U.N.C. (National Union of Veterans). The U.N.C. is an association of veterans, founded on pacifist patriotism and civic action, with a preference for civic action over political action.

In this monumental work, Cappiello moves beyond his usual whimsical, flamboyant commercial style to embrace a more heroic, disciplined aesthetic. The poster depicts a towering, stylized French soldier (Poilu) in a classic "en avant" stance. The high-contrast palette of deep navy, bold red, and cream underscores the figure's strength and resolve. The man is wearing a helmet and stands out against a blue, white, and red rainbow. He is walking on an octopus.
Fold marks restored. Some black in along the left side edge. Additional ink showing at a seam near the octopus. Small smudges in various areas, presumably from the printing, as shown in the photographs. Condition B. Printer: Devanbez.
