"The 1890's were the heyday of small magazines, most of them slanting their stories and articles to attract woman readers. Pre-radio and television, many women had no recreation other than reading, and while classic books were educational requirements, contemporary magazines provided a glimpse of the current scene they couldn't obtain otherwise. Lippincott's, based in Philadelphia, was one such monthly" (Gold p.74)
