The Juggler of Our Lady
25.25" x 31.75"
First performed in Monte Carlo in 1902, there were no female roles until Mary Garden persuaded Massenet to adapt the tenor role of Jean, the Juggler, for her. At the feast of Virgin Mary, a poor, emaciated juggler is blessed by the Virgin come to life. Rochegrosse was also a member of the Societe des Artistes Francais. He became an officer of the Legion d"honeur in 1910, and he enjoyed a long association with the Autombile Club of France, designing at least three posters for their yearly shows.
