Original 1940 Saturday Evening Post Newsstand Poster, "Singing Happy Birthday on the Telephone" by Emery Clarke, archival linen-backed in excellent condition with NO restoration. Ready to frame. Grade A, A-.

This scarce original newsstand advertising poster showcases Emery Clarke's whimsical, warmly humorous cover illustration for the April 13, 1940, issue of The Saturday Evening Post. A delighted older gentleman, visibly moved, sings "Happy Birthday to You" into a candlestick telephone while musical notes swirl around a green banker's lamp on his desk. The full masthead is prominently displayed at the top, with the issue date, volume, and price (5¢)

Promotional text at the bottom teasing "The Dragon Licks His Wounds" by Edgar Snow—a topical article reflecting on global events in that pre-WWII era. Produced in limited runs by the Curtis Publishing Company for prominent display at newsstands, drugstores, and other retail outlets, these large-format posters were printed on thin stock for temporary use and rarely preserved. Surviving examples in good condition are highly prized by collectors of Golden Age illustration, vintage advertising, and Americana ephemera.

Emery Clarke (American, 1911–1990) was a versatile illustrator known for his engaging depictions of mid-century American life. Born in Parsons, Kansas, he studied at the Kansas City Art Institute before moving to New York in 1936. He gained early recognition for painting pulp magazine covers, including iconic images for the Doc Savage series. In 1939, an unsolicited submission to The Saturday Evening Post was accepted, launching his work with major periodicals. He ultimately created seven covers for the Post, as well as illustrations for Look and other publications. During World War II, Clarke served in the Army, creating training films, and later collaborated on the comic strip Invisible Scarlet O'Neil. He taught at the Famous Artists School from 1958 and retired to Virginia.

Originally intended for short-term display at newsstands to boost magazine sales, very few of these ephemeral large-format posters have survived. This piece has been professionally preserved and is in excellent condition.

This poster has been professionally archival linen-backed, a process that stabilizes the vintage paper and protects it for centuries. It is in excellent vintage condition and arrives ready for a custom frame.
