Original, linen-backed French travel poster from 1926 promoting Pointe de Penmarch, located in the beautiful Finistère region of Brittany.
This striking Art Deco poster was created for the “Chemin de Fer de Paris à Orléans” (Paris to Orléans Railway) to promote tourism to Pointe de Penmarch, a famous landmark on Brittany’s rugged Atlantic coast. The powerful artwork features the Chapelle Notre Dame de la Joie, surrounded by people in traditional dress, set against a dramatic sunset sky. The vibrant colors, lively crowd scene, and expert lithography make this a standout example of French graphic art.
Pointe de Penmarch is a windswept headland on the southwestern tip of Finistère, known for its rugged beauty, iconic lighthouses (including the famous Eckmühl Lighthouse), and rich maritime traditions. The chapel shown, Notre-Dame de la Joie, has long been a destination for pilgrims and travelers, attracting visitors for both its spiritual significance and scenic views.
This poster not only promotes travel but also highlights Penmarch’s unique cultural heritage—illustrated by traditional costumes and festivals. The region was (and still is) known for its fishing villages, prehistoric megaliths, and as a gateway to Brittany’s wild seascapes.
Charles Jean Hallo (1882–1969), better known by his signature ALO, was a celebrated French graphic artist, illustrator, and poster designer. As a master of travel and landscape posters during France’s golden age of tourism promotion, Hallo’s work is instantly recognizable for its vivid color palettes and atmospheric portrayals of French regions.
He produced numerous posters for major French railway companies, including the Chemin de Fer de Paris à Orléans (P.O.) and the Chemins de fer de l’État, helping to shape the visual style of pre-war French travel advertising.
Each poster includes a Certificate of Authenticity. We use sturdy, appropriate packaging to ensure it arrives safely.
