Original World War 1 poster: Uncle Sam Needs That Extra Shovelful (of Coal.) If you like the Uncle Sam image, this is a good one to have. Help Uncle Sam to Win the War Rare linen backed original poster. B condition. This poster was torn in half both vertically and horizontally. Restoration work done is excellent and this is why we included all the extra images.
Printed for the U.S. Fuel Administration. Printed by Lathan Litho. & PTG Co, Brooklyn N.Y. Compared to other Fuel Administration posters this one is very dramatic and special. It depicts a workman shoveling coal, and Uncle Sam touching him gently on the shoulder. Beneath the image is a list of directions on how to best use coal and help with the war effort. This poster is desirable not only for its fantastic artistry but also as a piece of history in how energy was conserved and consumed!
The goal of the Fuel Administration was to encourage the conservation of fuel. By creating the Fuel Administration, the U S. Government was able to control energy consumtion. It also promoted Daylight Savings Time.
