Original linen-backed stone lithograph opera poster for Penelope. Done in 1913 by the great lithographer Georges Rochengrosse who created several opera posters at the turn of the century. Imprimerie Maquet, Paris. Penelope is a 1913 operetta with music by Gabrielle Faure.
The French composer Gabriel Urbain Fauré is best known for his songs and his typically French exquisiteness of taste.

This original poster is in very fine condition with excellent colors. No paper damage, but about 1/2' extra white border was trimmed at the time of linen backing, but does not affect the image. Linen backed and ready to frame. No pin holes, no tears, no stains. Stone lithograph.

The gladiator in the center of this image is Ulysee (Ulysses). Penelope has been waiting for ten years for the return of her husband, Ulysses, King of Ithaca. In the meantime, she has been besieged by suitors for her hand in marriage.

Gabriel Faure was born on May 12, 1845, in the provincial town of Pamiers. Faure was not a prolific composer; with few exceptions, he avoided the larger dramatic forms of opera and symphony. His compositions fall into three periods stylistically.
