This PLANT A VICTORY GARDEN poster portrays a family tending a victory garden. A young boy smiles as he looks over the abundant produce of his family's victory garden, in this 1943 WWII conservation themed poster entitled, "Plant A Victory Garden." The poster highlights the benefit of maintaining a garden as a way to preserve ones food rations for more limited items like meat. The artwork stresses the involvement of all members of the family and shows how everyone can participate in the war effort. The concept of food as a weapon was carried through in many similarly themed posters that demonstrated the conservation of home-grown and canned foods, the repurposing of leftovers, or the benefits of healthy eating.
Shortly after the United States was drawn into the Second World War, victory gardens began to reemerge. During World War II, Victory Gardens were planted by families in the United States (the Home Front) to help prevent a food shortage. (A similar program was also implemented during WW1). Planting Victory Gardens helped make sure that there was enough food for our soldiers fighting around the world. Because canned vegetables were rationed, Victory Gardens also helped people stretch their ration coupons (the amount of certain foods they were allowed to buy at the store).
By 1944 Victory Gardens were responsible for producing 40% of all vegetables grown in the United States. More than one million tons of vegetables were grown in Victory Gardens during the war.
