Serge Lifar bio 1905-1986
Russian-French dancer and choreographer of exceptional stage presence, who revitalized the Paris Opéra Ballet and was the primary figure of modern French ballet.
Born in Kiev, Lifar was a premier dancer in the Ballet Company of the Russian impresario Sergei Diaghilev before becoming director of the Paris Opéra Ballet in 1929. Conveying drama through choreography, he created more than 50 ballets on themes from myth, legend, and history and used male dancers in dominant rather than supporting roles.

The large French format is a rare French Art Deco period dance poster by Paul Colin, printed in 1935. This is a promotional piece for Russian born Serge Lifar, who was the premier dancer for Diaghilev's Ballet Company before becoming Director of the Paris Opera Ballet in 1929. Considered one of the finest posters ever created for a dancer.
