Hurtu Bicycles and Automobiles

INV. #:
Hurtu. Bicycles and Automobiles. Artist: Henri Gray was a pseudonym of Henri Boulanger. Size: 42.5" x 62". Year: c. 1900.

Original linen backed. Like many of their early competitors in the motoring field, Hurtu began by manufacturing bicycles and then added automobiles. Graphically speaking, this is expressed lucidity, playing on the lady and her ride before the driver and his open-air coupe, actually segregating him within the decorative confines of an Art Nouveau framing device. What makes this standout piece of craftsmanship, however, is a certain sense of secrecy that pervades the Gray design, a wispy portrayal of a thinly-disguised clandestine associations of those in the know in matters of vehicular prawns. Tax stamp lower right corner.
