The Gladiator bicycle firm was founded in 1891 by Auro and Darracq. By 1896, when the automobile fever had already swept through France and England, a British groupaquired Gladiator and joined it with Clement with the idea of producing automobiles. The first model was a 4- h.p., single cylinder car with the engine mounted horizontally on a tubular frame. In 1910 the company was bought back from the British and moved back to Puteaux/Seine.
