Enlist in the Waves
27 x 38.5
INV. #:
Enlist in the Waves, Release a Man to Fight at Sea. Original and linen backed. Navy recruiting station poster that features a female Navy officer saluting.
The Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service (WAVES) were a World War II-era division of the U.S. Navy that consisted entirely of women. The world "emergency" implied that the acceptance of women was due to the unusual circumstances of the war and that at the end of the war the women would not continue in Navy careers.
WAVES began in August 1942, when Mildred McAfee, President of Wellesley College, was sworn in as a Naval Reserve Lieutenant Commander, the first female commissioned officer in the U.S. Navy history. She also served as the first WAVES director.
