This is the first poster to call the Germans Huns. Bloody hand print identifies their cruelty. The image reflects a growing anti-German sentiment in the U.S, and was one of a number of posters equating the Hun with limitless bloodshed. St. John became well known as an artist for his later illustrations in pulp magazines, especially those with a fantasy and mystical theme. His original oils in that genre are quite sought after. |
