Linen backed chromolithograph turn of the century BETTERAVES. Large semi sweet sugar beets. One with green top and one with the rose colored top. Printed by L. Baudot in Paris. Excellent condition image in the botanical style.
The sugar beet, which originated in Northern Europe, has long been a staple of nutrition and its cultivation dates back to the middle ages. It wasn't until 1811, however, that the first industrial process for the extraction of its sugars was developped in France. Today, the sugar beet is the first industrial culture in France and a major resource for the sugar industry. |
