Notes   Linen backed original American World War One poster: That Liberty Shall Not Perish From the Earth -- Buy Liberty Bonds. America on fire; the Statue of Liberty in ruins; New York City destroyed. The powerful visual images created for these world war 1 posters brought the American population to rally around the government to support and pay for this war. Such stark images brought the tragedy of Europe's fall to the eyes of what may happen in America Ref: Johnson 23, Darracott 35, Rawls 227

"That Liberty shall not perish." This lurid poster of an imagined air raid on New York was meant to show Americans how the war might look if it reached our shores. The details of the poster are hard to see, but on the left-hand side of the Statue of Liberty is a sunken ship; the statue's head also lies in the water at the base of her pedestal to the right, and German planes fly overhead. To overcome the American aversion to "foreign entanglements" and her traditional isolationism appeals like "That Liberty shall not perish" were frequent.
