Notes   Menton is situated at the eastern end of the French Riviera, right on the Italian border. It had been best known as the "citrus city" before a British physician in the late 19th century discovered it had the mildest climate on the French Riviera and sent home raving reviews of its lovely, unspoiled setting. Word spread, convalescents came from all over Europe and the citrus city boomed as a health resort. Figuring that the city's healthful reputation was firmly entrenched in the viewer's mind, Richard opens a window onto "The Pearl of France" for the PLM rail line, its tropical indulgence driving all curative thoughts immediately to the back of one's mind.
